Mindfulness and Conflict, or, Meditation in Mediation
Suzuki Roshi famously observed that, “in the beginner's mind there are many possibilities, but in the expert's there are few.”
As mediators and practitioners guiding people through conflict, we are paid for our ability to approach conflict with a beginner’s mind: we don’t presume to know what’s best for the disputants; we don’t force or pressure them to accept proposals; and we don’t bring our baggage into the process. Rather, we help disputants understand and articulate their needs and guide them with open-mindedness and impartiality to a favorable resolution—one that may or may not be apparent at the outset of a dispute.
Yet, we are human. And as such, we are susceptible to bias, ill-will, and judgments. How then can we ensure to whatever extent possible that we remain open-minded and impartial?
On Wednesday, May 25, 2016, Greg Gerber, an executive at a Chicago-based real estate firm and a certified meditation instructor, will give a presentation about mindfulness and conflict. No doubt you have heard the word “mindfulness” before. Greg will talk about what it is and what it’s not. He will explain how it can be harnessed to help us remain open-minded and impartial even in the midst of intense conflict. And he will discuss how it can not only make us better ADR professionals, but better human beings.
No previous experience with mindfulness or meditation is required. The only thing that’s needed is an open mind and a desire to learn something new. We hope you will join us on May 25!
CEU credits will be offered at this program.
